“Stop telling tales!” was the admonition if a child gossiped or sounded to be stretching the truth. In writing stories from our personal memory, the truth is subject to ‘slippage’. It could be distance in time from the occasion or character: but more than that, our unconscious selects what to say, and de-selects other aspects. In this way, you may find these Tales to be ‘telling’ of the author’s memory bias. I trust you will accept the title of this volume in that spirit. The themes of these tales could be summarised as Places, Faces and Spaces. Youthful memories which prompted them returned one by one, surfacing between April 2019 and October 2022.
